An Anti-Abortion Law Was Just Passed in Alabama — What The Actual F?

My opinion on the current state of abortion law in the USA, from across the pond.

This week, Tuesday 14th of May to be more specific, the state of Alabama, USA passed a new law, criminalising the process of abortion. Any one who “commits” the act of abortion, will face from 10–99 years behind bars, however the women who have the abortion will not be prosecuted. The only time an abortion will be allowed is it the health of the mother would be at serious risk if the pregnancy were go continue, I must stress — this is solely regarding physical health.

Up to 99 years. For choosing to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. A pregnancy a woman may not feel she can go through, for any number of reasons.

Rape and incest are things which can seriously damage a woman’s mental health, and 100% valid reasons for wanting to terminate a pregnancy. But this won’t be allowed.

Concern over the health and wellbeing of the baby is 100% a valid reason for wanting to terminate a pregnancy. But this won’t be allowed.

Being young, in college and single is 100% a valid reason for wanting to terminate a pregnancy. But this won’t be allowed.

Not feeling ready to be a parent, or wanting to concentrate on a career first is 100% a valid reason for wanting to terminate a pregnancy. But this won’t be allowed.

Simply not wanting to have a child, for whatever damn reason they have and 100% valid reasons for wanting to terminate a pregnancy. But this won’t be allowed.

Whatever the reason for having a termination, it is all down to the mother and her decision alone. It is her body, her mind, and her life. Having that decision taken away from a woman is degrading and demoralising.

The decision to have an abortion is never an easy one to make, and here in the UK support is offered to women who decide this route is best for them. There are also legal issues, such as abortions only happening up to 24 weeks in pregnancy, unless the mother or baby is at risk of serious illness or disability. Abortions can also only happen at licensed hospitals or GP surgerys, and are free of charge on the NHS.

Why the world, the western world, the old white men of the western world, feel they have the right to take this human right away from a woman is disgusting to me, and seeing this happening in Alabama, and other states across America, saddens me. I’m sorry for what is happening in America right now, women’s rights are being stripped away from them and this needs to change.
